Who needs a pristine front lawn when you can have an edible garden! Plans are in the works to dig up a suburban front yard and replace most of it with an edible garden. Since we live in the Northeast, we will also include some small shrubs and plants with some year round interest. We will be installing three raised vegetable gardening beds with trellises as well as a more naturally shaped English cottage style herb garden. What will the neighbors think! Well we'll see. Maybe they will come over to share our feast! Photos of the projects to follow. Stay tuned!

Rebecca, did you test your soil for lead, etc? I guess the raised beds will correct any problems. It's a great idea! I am jealous, esp. for your kids. Deborah
Thanks for the comment, Deborah. It is always a good idea to test your soil. Your local Extension Center can do it for you if you bring them a sample. Mostly, I use the growing medium recipe from my dirt pie post. However, for these large boxes, it was more cost-effective to add a high quality organic soil mix with my compost (organic, vegetable based) and the vermiculite/peat moss. However, I did not have it tested.
